Dog Training: A Canine's View

As far as dog training is concerned, I have a bone to pick with humans. While dogs have gained a reputation as “man’s best friend”, it occurs to me that the opposite is not necessarily true. After all, have you ever heard of a human referred to as his “dog’s best friend”? Me neither. Isn’t that strange?

The more I thought about it, the more I realized that people often treat their dogs in a cavalier manner (no offense to spaniels). Then it hit me:  humans just don’t 'get' canines. And the light bulb went on … what people need is a dog’s perspective on the canine race - straight from the dog’s mouth so to speak!

In my opinion, the two-legged blunder miserably when it comes to dog training without stress. Over and over again, I have observed humans ordering their dogs around and expecting instant miracles, when the only obvious connection between the two of them is the leash. Human shouts at dog. Dog ignores or barks back. And most times they’re not even talking about the same thing - it’s doggone bizarre!

So let me jump right in with all four paws and take the lead, because I have a Secret with a capital ‘S’ which is very dear to my heart. It is really the key to total harmony between you and your dog. Now pay attention, because if you miss this crucial point, you doom yourself to failure, and your dog may end up paying with his life.

Dog Whisperer:  The Bare Bones of Dog Training

Learn Dog Whisperer SkillsBecoming a dog whisperer is vital to understanding and communicating with your pooch. When you speak dog language, not only will you capture all that your dog is telling you with his body language and facial expression, but you will know how to assume alpha dog position in his eyes.

You would not dream of trying to read without learning the alphabet first, would you? And would you start a debate with a person who speaks a language totally foreign to you? Chances are you wouldn’t get very far, right? So why do it with your pooch?

If you’re finding yourself waging an uphill battle with your pooch for alpha dog position, relax and picture yourself in complete control, because I am about to hand you the key to your dog’s heart and mind.

Dog Behavior:  The Meat of the Matter

Dog Obedience Training:  The Icing on the Cake

Once you understand the fine points of dog obedience training, you will be able to turn your dog into a model citizen, whether you choose to use rewards, clicker, or ultrasonic whistle. But more importantly, you will know which types of collar to use and which to stay away from:  gentle leader, check collar, prong collar, electric collar - do you know which one of these could easily kill your dog and which could harm his immune system?

But dog obedience is not all work and no play. When we get the hang of it, we dogs looove to learn commands: stay, heel, stand, wait, seek, etc., etc., etc. And don’t forget the tricks (that’s the best part): beg, catch, shake, climb, crawl, roll over ... no, not you ... your dog!
